About The Sponsored Walk
Back in the 1970s the annual event, usually held in either March or April, was quite different from what it is now. A team of oragnisers, including Bill Cross and the current oragniser Paul Ingram, were led by Don Hutchinson. The team of Walkers left from the Scout Hut in Lytham and walked to the Grapes Public House in Wrea Green. They hired the room above the Grapes and when they arrived the Walkers were greeted with food and drink. Having satisfied their appetites and enjoyed a couple of drinks, the team set off on the return visit. The walk officially ended at the Scout Hut, but many remember actually finishing in Park View Road at Bill Cross's house for a couple more, well deserved, drinks!
Eventually Don Hutchinson stepped down as organiser and Paul Ingram took over. After about 20 years of annually walking to The Grapes, it was decided that Ballam Road had become too busy and that it was dangerous for children to walk. The decision was made to make the new route a 10 mile walk; starting at the Windmill, walking along the promenade up to the Sand Yachting Club and making the return trip. Many people continued to take part in an effort to raise funds for Club Day, but after 3 years it was decided to change the route for one that was less onerous! So route number 3 was invented and this is route that remains today. The event is staged in Lowther Gardens. Everybody who enters is given a start time, they then have one hour to compete as many laps of the Gardens as they can. As there is no set distance that somebody has to walk it also means that anybody can take part, even if they find walking a long distance difficult. Having completed a lap, the sponsor form is stamped and refreshments in the form of hot and cold drinks, sweets and chocolates are available to satisfy the appetitie, before the next lap gets underway!
The new walk is very successful and the present organisers, Margaret Nickson and Paul Ingram, decided in 2005 to try something new - all walkers were given the choice to wear fancy dress! The children and adults enjoy the challenge and they looked great.
The Sponsored Walk is held every year and sponsor forms are given to each Church represented on the Club Day Committee. The Church which raises the most amount of money receives the Bill Cross Memorial Trophy.
